DOMESTIC/STANDARD is a video essay that investigates the libidinal economy of housework. Combining music videos, advertisements, porn, ASMR videos, YouTube tutorials, and archival footage, DOMESTIC/STANDARD probes the ways in which the production of desire works affectively to both condition the laboring body and disguise the labor-character of work. It situates this visual economy of housework within a historical context, from the sexualization of the French maid to the standardization of the Frankfurt kitchen. The home is not where you go when you leave the factory, it is a factory.
