What is the connection between drone warfare, the 2008 housing crash, the 2001 war in Afghanistan, and your current apartment?
In “Shelter,” Nicholas Korody links the American postwar housing boom and the suburban family rituals it birthed, the gamified practices of drone warfare, and our relationship to real estate in the digital era. Rather than a sanctuary, the home is exposed as a mutating site of conflict, tension, and contradiction. Leading us to a question that, in the wake of the ongoing genocide in Gaza, is urgent: does distance really save us from the violence of our own actions?
